Why You Should Invest In A Face Sun Cream

By Veronica Cappelletti

A suntan as fashion statement is a relatively new concept. Coco Chanel made it popular early in the twentieth century. Before then, tanned skin was reserved for the lower classes who often made their living outdoors. However, while tanned skin may now be fashionable, the risks that come with it aren't. This is why you need a good face sun cream.

A small degree of exposure to sunlight is good for you, since it helps your body to produce vitamin D which keeps your bones strong. Too much of a good thing is not good anymore, though, and too much sunlight ages your skin. It also increases the probability that you might get skin cancer.

The culprits are ultraviolet rays emitted by the sun. There are two types. UVA rays affect the collagen levels in your skin and causes it to become less elastic, giving it a saggy, wrinkled appearance. UVB rays don't penetrate your skin as deeply as UVA rays, but they cause more serious damage. These are the rays that turn your skin brown or, if you're exposed to them for too long, to burn or even blister your epidermis. They also cause cancer of the skin. The best way to protect yourself is through a broad-spectrum sunscreen.

To protect your face, it's better to use a sunscreen that has been formulated for facial skin specifically. This is because your facial skin is oilier and doesn't react well to the richer creams you use on your body. Facial sunscreens are lighter and often better for sensitive skin too.

After you've applied moisturizer in the morning, apply about a quarter teaspoonful of facial sunscreen. Less than this amount won't provide the protection you need. Then apply the cream again as the day progresses, especially if you're going to be outdoors.

It's good to remember other basic tips too. Ultraviolet rays are strongest around midday, so if you can, stay indoors between ten in the morning and two in the afternoon. The harmful rays are also stronger the higher up you are or the closer you are to surfaces like water and snow that reflect sunlight. A broad-brimmed hat will help keep some of the rays off your skin.

Many people don't like having pale skin because it makes them look unhealthy. However, you don't need to risk skin damage to get that healthy glow. Cosmetics like bronzing creams or powders provide instant results while self-tanning products give longer-lasting results.

If you skip the face sun cream, you may regret it one day when you need expensive plastic surgery to repair the damage caused by skin cancer or the loss of the skin's elasticity. It's better to be safe than sorry. There are so many products on the market that you'll easily find one that will suit your skin, your lifestyle and your budget and that will easily fit into your pocket or handbag.
